One carat is 0.2 grams. Spread — how large the diamond looks — depends on shape and cut as well as weight.
A well-cut round is about 5.1 mm at 0.50 ct, 6.4 mm at 1.00 ct, 8.1 mm at 2.00 ct, and 9.3 mm at 3.00 ct. Those are face-up diameters, not a promise for every stone. A deep cut weighs the same and looks smaller.

Prices step up around round weights (1.00, 1.50, 2.00) because shoppers search those numbers. A 0.90 ct diamond can look almost the same as a 1.00 ct and cost less. The same pattern shows up just under 2.00 ct.

Elongated shapes (oval, pear, marquise) cover more of the finger at the same carat. If the goal is a bigger look, shape can do more than another tenth of a carat.
