Cut is the workmanship of the stone: proportions, symmetry, and polish working together.
A round brilliant with an Excellent or Ideal cut throws light back to the eye. A deep or shallow cut leaks light through the sides and looks smaller and darker even at the same carat. That is why two 1 carat rounds can look like different products.

Fancy shapes do not always receive the same cut grade. An oval can show a bow-tie (a dark band across the center). An emerald cut shows inclusions more readily because of its open step-cut facets. Watch the video, not only the grade.

Polish and symmetry are listed separately on the report. Very Good or Excellent on both is a practical floor for a center stone.
