Guides
Color grades how much yellow or brown a white diamond shows, from D (colorless) downward.
D, E, and F are colorless. Side by side you can tell them apart; in a setting, most people cannot. G and H are near-colorless and are the usual value range for a white-looking center stone. I and J show a hint of warmth that is more obvious in yellow gold than in platinum or white gold.

Lab-grown and natural diamonds use the same color scale. A G lab-grown and a G natural should look the same face-up. The price gap comes from origin, not from a different color system.

Fancy colored diamonds (pink, blue, yellow) use a different grading language. The pages on Carat Mate are for white diamonds graded on the D–Z scale. Strong fluorescence can also change how white a stone looks — check the fluorescence guide and the listing media.
