A certified lab-grown loose diamond is a real diamond sold without a setting, with an independent lab report you can match to the stone.
Loose means the diamond is not mounted. You are buying the stone itself, so the price is the diamond price rather than a bundled ring. Certified means a gem lab — usually GIA or IGI on Carat Mate — has graded carat, color, clarity, and, for rounds, cut.
The report number should match the laser inscription on the girdle. Open the certificate on the diamond page and confirm the measurements, not only the headline grade.

Lab-grown diamonds are crystallized carbon grown by chemical vapor deposition (CVD) or high pressure, high temperature (HPHT). Both are diamonds. The growth method does not replace the 4Cs. Two CVD stones with different cut and clarity will not look the same.
A proper lab-grown report states that the stone is laboratory-grown. If a listing has photos but no report you can open, treat the grade as unverified.

For a round, start with Excellent or Ideal cut, then choose color and clarity you can live with. G–H color and VS2 clarity are common floors because they look white and clean in most settings without paying for grades you cannot see face-up.
Fancy shapes (oval, pear, princess, emerald, cushion) rely more on the photo and 360° view. Cut grades were built around rounds, so length-to-width ratio, bow-tie, and facet pattern matter as much as the printed grade.

Filter lab-grown inventory by shape, carat, color, clarity, and price. Compare two or three stones at the same carat instead of chasing a single grade. Use the certificate, the photo, and the 360° video together.
When a stone matches, request it. Carat Mate follows up so you can confirm the exact diamond before you pay. The stone ships with its lab report.
